City of superhuman vs. village of subhuman

१३ आश्विन २०७७, मंगलबार

City is considered as well facilitated place to live for better opportunity. City is center for politicians and administrators to run state activities. City is equally an attractive destination for media, job seekers, common people for physical facilities such as road and transportation, electricity and drinking water, school and university, hospital and healthcare, information and communication, art and creation, and so on. Especially, in capital city, man of all class, levels, and professions dream to enjoy better opportunities. Tourists around the world, visit capital city first then travel other destination. Obviously, city is a big market for businessmen, a world of work for workers, education hub for students, learners, researchers as well as world class healthcare facility for patients. So, city is assumed as habitant of superhuman.

On the other hand, village is the capital of farmers, peasants and economically weak people. Naturally, village is holy place and real heaven, where natural beauty and diversity exist. Villagers know to live with nature. They have own technology and traditional knowledge and art to live. They have strong sense of peace and harmony to live with other living beings in the nature. Villagers grow grains, vegetables, milk, meat, and other food. They sell these food items to city and buy factory made items such as kitchen utensils, farming tools, garments, salt, spices and other items from city. City and village have complementary relationship.

In the recent days, almost all class and level of people have excessive attachment to city. Almost all high level politician and employees have expensive house in capital city. They have strong fond of having luxurious car and other physical facilities. As a result, gradually villages and villagers have been going to be dominated by the city and city dwellers. They assumed themselves as superhuman and villagers as subhuman. Obviously, village people have to work in hot sun, rainy and muddy soils. They have to care cows and buffalos, goats and chicken. They have no time to care their body and health regularly. They have strong smells of sweat. They have to wear easy and cheap cloths in farming. They have to work hard in farm to grow foods. They eat ghee, milk, and fat meat. They have no enough money, political and administrative approach in relation to the man of city. Because, they have to engage in farm rather meeting politicians, bureaucrats, police and other officials. As a result, they are blamed as uncivilized, uneducated, or less educated, uncultured, conservative and traditional or second grade human commonly dominating words—Pakhe or Khanthe in the cosmetic eyes of city of men.

Really, village is a backbone of city. City man cannot touch their hand and mouth without agricultural production from village. They cannot run their factory without raw material supply from the village. They cannot make profit unless the energetic labor force from the village. They need villages to sell their factory products. It is already proved that, in the hard time of economic blockade, villagers have no problems to eat and live. They have no adverse effect of such type of adverse situation. But, city men have remain hunger for weeks and weeks despite they have bundle of money in hand. In this sense, villagers are independent and can easily tolerate any type of difficulties. They can produce all necessary foods and goods even they can make traditional cloths for themselves. The lovely nature has given too many options to live without any difficulty. They are naturally fit to adjust to any seasons and situations. They have blessed from nature. They do not know to cheat, to manipulate. They still afraid of god and cannot commit any type of crime. They have not only organic food and drink, air and water, they have organic warm of the sun and cool of the moon. They have also organic behavior. Youth lovers have love for life and eternity. They need not to be looked sexy and glamorous.

City has offered better healthcare and education facilities, better technology, skill, and employment opportunity. Really, city is the real market of village production. Villagers are able to earn money from city. Despite of these positive sides, city has strong sense of disrespect to villagers, farmers and poor people of village. City people assumed themselves as educated, cultured, civilized, skilled, and superhuman. They have arrogance of money, muscle, and power. They have confusion that, big bungalow, luxurious cars, expensive jewelries, bank balance and relation to police, politician and don are the determinant of human prosperity. So, to gain these things, people of city run for money and power, involve in crime, commit corruption, and cheat others. Artificial life style, cosmetic behavior, exaggeration, fake, drama, and pretention are common characteristics of city people whereas, easy, simple, natural, organic, cooperative, helpful, kindness are the identity of village and villagers.

According to latest census only 17% people live in city. Village have higher rate of illiteracy, infant and mother mortality and less income. White color suited-booted people have concentrated all state power and facilities in the city. So, city is being overcrowded, unmanaged and it is difficult to provide urban facilities in the city. For example, drinking water facility is quiet out of access to the people of Kathmandu valley. Public transportation is being unsecured and overcrowded. Basic service providers have been losing service delivery capacity. As a result, peoples’ dissatisfaction is arising day by day. At the same time, corrupt officials have been taking personal benefits from the crowd of the service recipients.

Youth people in village are migrating to abroad in search for work. It is difficult to carry farming, gathering in social work, tackle crisis and rescue victims of disaster. Women are forced to shoulder dead body for funeral. They are forced to plough their farm. Landowner and moneylender have been exploiting peasants and farmers physically and economically. They have equally influence in village as well as in city. Actually, they are in favor of city men. Landless farmers are forced to serve them or migrate to city or abroad for seeking work.

It is crystal clear that city is heavily depends on village in comparison the dependency of village on city. Especially, foods and vegetable, milk and meat, raw materials and labor force are the major supply from village to city. Without these resources city cannot run industry and make profit. Similarly, landless and unemployed people of village can get employment, better healthcare and higher study facility in city. They can get market to sell their agricultural and other products in city. In this way, village-city relation is assumed as two sides of a single coin. Such type of crux of relationship should be realized by the superhuman of city. For this, they have the sense of respect and recognition to village people. Especially, in the time of human made crisis and insurgency, or natural disaster and calamities, village is proven as resilient place to live. For example, in the time of supply chain crisis, earthquake and ongoing corona pandemic, village people have come back to village to get rid of extreme hit by the crisis.

However, village people have strong desire to migrate to city. They have dream to be city dweller. In the name of employment, education, treatment, going abroad and getting better facilities, rural population have strong craze to go to city. One of the reasons of migration to city is availability of urban facilities which lacks in the village. Our political leaders, academicians, administrators, development planners, economists, sociologists, entrepreneurs and businesspersons have no long term vision to make our village prosperous. Instead of making village attractive, they concentrated political and administrative power in the city. As a result, charm of living in village is being fading away. Similarly, agricultural occupation is considered as subgrade occupation which result the significant reduction in agricultural production. It is also killing the entrepreneurship of youth and transforming them into rent-seeker.

Hence, they try first to be jobholder, otherwise migrating abroad instead of engaging with production process. In this way, rural population has been gradually migrating to city. In the meanwhile, city people have been dominating village people in city as poor, homeless, subhuman and substandard class. In the corona crisis, village people who are living in rent have been treated inhumanly. Even the health workers, security persons who are fighting in the frontline against pandemic are forced to face such inhuman behavior of house owners. Similarly, workers have forced to walk away from city to their home. City people especially Nouveau riche have arrogance of money and power. They have been forgetting the fact that their house was built by the skill and muscle of poor workers and food and vegetable from the farm of farmers. Without any quality of being superior they assumed themselves as superhuman.

Finally, there are too many opportunities in village. To exploit these potentialities, rural infrastructures such as rural road, transportation, electricity, drinking water, information and communication, healthcare, education, playing ground, tourism and other rural facilities should be built. Traditional agricultural technology should be replaced with modern technology to make subsistence farming system into commercial. Village people should be given entrepreneur training to make their occupation more profitable and sustainable. Agro-forestry based industry should be established in the rural areas with the meaningful participation of rural people. Government subsidies should be reached at the door of farmer without any intermediaries and middlemen. In the name of consultancy, research and study more than two-third resources have been misusing.

So, intervention in policy level and reform in implementation level is necessary to control such irregularities. City people have to abandon their arrogance of supremacy over village people. They have to respect the human value of village people. Human value is equally respectable across the earth. Village welcomes you, invites you, provide shelter you at the time of any kinds of crisis. Village is the natural heaven. City of dream is destroying the dreams of dreamers. Whereas, beauty of village can steal your heart, can win your mind.
