‘Freedom could be regulated’

Kathmandu, (RSS): Chairman of the High Level Recommendation Committee formed for implementation of National Mass Media Policy Kashiraj Dahal has said that freedom of expression could be regulated instead of control.

At a programme organized here by Freedom Forum on Monday, Dahal said that freedom of expression is mother of all freedoms adding that no policy should control the freedom of expression but regulation is required if needed.

We have formulated the mass media policy after receiving feedback by issuing notice, Act, laws could be made based on policy as policy was the foundation.

He also said that draft of the Public Service Broadcasting Act is in the final stage while the preparations on Advertisement Council Act are ongoing.

On the occasion, former chairman of Federation of Nepalis Journalist (FNJ) Dr Mahendra Bista said that the Mass Media Policy is not one-sided as it was drafted after a long consultation.

Likewise, Freedom Forum’s Executive Chief Taranath Dahal said that the policy should be reformed along with its implementation.

Advocate Tanka Aryal and Freedom Forum’s programme coordinator Sanjiv Ghimire, senior advocate Ram Krishna Nirala, media law expert Dr Ram Krishna Timilsina and others also expressed their opinions on the occasion.
