Artificial Intelligence on the rise

Not long ago we thought of Artificial Intelligence (A.I) as a thing of science fiction. But since the turn of the century advancements on technology has come to a point, where anything we imagine has even the slightest possibility to come true. And when it comes to A.I it’s no different.

You might not have noticed, but over the weekend a little coup took place. On Friday night (Aug. 18th 2017), in front of a crowd of thousands, The world’s best Dota 2 players just got destroyed by a killer A.I -from Elon Musks backed non-profit startup OpenAI. Elon Musk the CEO of Tesla, Inc. and founder of SpaceX, who also is a revolutionary in technology tweeted right after the bots victory “OpenAI first ever to defeat world’s best players in competitive eSports. Vastly more complex than traditional board games like chess & Go.”

The human champ, the affable Danil “Dendi” Ishutin, threw in the towel after being killed three times, saying he couldn’t beat the unstoppable bot. “It feels a little bit like human,” said Dendi. “But at the same time, it’s something else.”

Not only has A.I been advanced enough to beat professional video-gamers but A.I has been so advanced to the point where it has beaten doctors at diagnosing certain diseases.

A China-made AI (Artificial Intelligence)-based software made its debut Saturday at a seminar held in Hengyang City, central China’s Hunan Province. The software consists of diagnostic models involving more than 30 diseases, such as Tuberculosis and depression, which are likely to be misdiagnosed. Based on trial tests in several hospitals, the AI “doctor’s” successful diagnosis rate is 20 percent higher than human doctors.

With the developments on technology increasing day by day, there is also a possibility of technology getting the better of us. Like we have seen and read in countless Sci-FI movies and novels of how a fully developed Artificial Intelligence might contradict it’s purpose and start making it’s own decision leading to the end of our human civilization or worse. So the question we have to ask ourselves is, “A.I development good or bad for the human race?”.
